own your checkin

i rewrote aaron parecki’s ownyourgram a little bit, so that can push your foursquare (or swarm) checkins via micropub to your site: i called it ownyourcheckin (of course).

i have it running on ownyourcheckin.wirres.net, but i haven’t tested it very much yet. it seems to work, though and also fetches images that are posted with the checkin, here’s my latest checkin.

ownyourcheckin is notified via the foursquare real-time-API, so it can publish checkins instantaneously. i noticed, however, that the images seem to need some processing time at foursquare, so i let ownyourchecking sleep 30 seconds, before it queries the API for images. otherwise foursquare regularly returns empty image arrays. with the short delay, images are (mostly) returned by the API.

i’m pretty sure that i introduced a lot of bugs into the code and there are some more features that i’d like to implement, that are still not done: foursquare venue categories do not get fetched yet and person tags from people you tag in your check-in could also be fetched. and what about those stickers?

just found out, foursquare pushes the checkin to the real-time API, even if the image upload is still going on or fails. so there’s always a chance of not catching those images.

iOS GPS logger and compass

felix schwenzel, , in notiert

aaron parecki’s (@aaronpk) iOS GPS logger works pretty well in conjunction with compass. with one exception though: the underground.

compass with some of my location data

i found compass in the footer of aaron’s new telegraph web app, where it’s listed as part of the p3k suite. compass at p3k.io didn’t work though (it threw 500 errors). so i uncommented 2 lines in AppDelegate.m to use compass at compass.esripdx.com instead of compass.p3k.io.

to make the app upload the location data i had to add a write token that i got from compass.esripdx.com/settings/[database name]. with those hardcoded credentials the ios GPS logger sends it’s data to compass just fine.

nice work aaron, thanks a lot for opening your tools to the public!

“first openly asshole president”

felix schwenzel, in wirres.net/en

in the last couple of days, there was a lot of talk about insults and harrassment, especialy on facebook and twitter.

two month ago, when i watched jon stewarts daily show, i was amazed how jon stewart loves to insult people he dislikes. this is pretty evident, when stewart starts to talk about donald trump. however, the sheer frequency in which stewart called trump an asshole was amazing.

rollingstone.com:

In a second segment dedicated to Trump, Daily Show senior election correspondent Jordan Klepper talks about how The Donald, if elected, could be “our first openly asshole President.” Klepper then says that while Nixon was a “gaping asshole, but closeted,” Trump “says it loud and proud.” The segment also featured a cameo appearance by noted “asshole” Paul Rudd.

in germany lots of people say, criticism should be factual. germans even expect comedians to be factual. and indeed, it is more or less impossible to call someone an asshole, without facing legal consequences. there is only one way to call someone an asshole without consequences: call yourself an asshole. from time to time i do so.
