eben die erste folge von aaron sorkins neuer HBO-serie „the newsroom“ gesehen. und ix bin begeistert. sorkin ist wieder mindestens so gut wie zu the „west-wing“-zeiten. dialoge, die beides sind, leicht pathetisch und lakonisch. dialoge voller die am besten funktionieren, wenn die protagonisten wie irre durch die gegend laufen, schnell, so geschliffen, dass kein mensch sie sich spontan ausdenken könnte, und doch wahrhaftig und realistisch. sorkins fernsehsendungen sind voll mit überdurchschnittlich intelligenten menschen*, die ständig geschliffene reden halten und doch wirkt jede situation, bis ins letzte augenzwinkern, realistisch.

nachdem ich die erste folge von the newsroom gesehen habe, wünschte ich mir nichts sehnlicher, als die ganze erste staffel the newsroom als uk-import DVD neben mir liegen zu haben und die nacht über 8 folgen nacheinander sehen zu können. wie das manchmal bei „the west wing“ oder „the wire“ passierte. is aber nicht. auf die DVD müssen wir mindestens ein jahr warten.

amerikaner können sich auf youtube mit der ersten folge anfixen lassen. europäer müssen sich einen VPN-zugang besorgen (affiliate- und rabatt-code PVUVGHT für black VPN) und gut english können um sich anfixen zu lassen.

dan rather mochte den newsroom:

I'm aware that my musings run counter to some of the more prominent early reviews in high-profile publications such as The New Yorker and the New York Times. But with all due respect (and I have a lot of it for those reviewers), I just don't think they "get it"; they've somehow missed the breadth, depth and "got it right" qualities –- and importance — of Newsroom. Maybe it's because they are print people. Then, too, maybe they're right and I'm wrong. I never rule out the possibility of that. But I've lived in the world of television newsrooms for most of my adult life. I know the people, the venues and the challenges — the satisfactions of success and the heartbreak when things go awry. From where I sit and based on my experience, Sorkin and crew have got it amazingly right, even when they over talk it.

But if you liked the movies Citizen Kane, Network, and Broadcast News, if you liked the television series West Wing, Mad Men, or The Good Wife, you're going to love Newsroom. At least the first installment. And if Sorkin, his writers and their excellent actors can maintain this level, you'll probably like the full run.

It has the potential to become a classic.

*) jeff daniels wirkt bei seinem auftritt bei craig ferguson nicht überintelligent, aber in der sendung schon. aber ein klasse schauspieler, das ist er durchaus.

sarah nicole prickett hat mit aaron sorkin gesprochen und die show ganz gut seziert:

Months before seeing the pilot, I read its entire (leaked) script. […] The great American dialectic – optimism and realism, faith and reason – is thrillingly animated onscreen, but hardly moreso than on the page. I had to watch the show twice just to believe (a) how good that script was and (b) how incredibly convinced of its goodness, in every sense of “good,” it was.
